In a previous post I wrote about the benefits of team tennis. Well now, the Tiger Tennis Academy is getting into the game and starting a team of our own!

So, why team tennis? This is an individual sport, right? Not necessarily.

Here is a list of reasons why team tennis is a great thing to be a part of:

  • It’s more engaging. Teammates are a support system, cheerleaders, and fellow competitors you can rely on to boost your interest in a contest.
  • There’s more incentive to win. Playing for yourself is reason enough to want to win, but playing for a team makes you want to give your best effort even more (I’m sure there’s a study out there confirming this….)
  • It’s good for your sanity. In tournaments, or any kind of individual match play, it can get lonely on court. On a tough day, a lack of teammates or support can be discouraging and frustrating. This problem isn’t typically present in team tennis.
  • It makes the game more familiar for new players. Mainstream American sports hold certain nuances and traditions—lineup announcements, on-court coaching, etc.—that tournament tennis just doesn’t have. Team tennis does, though, making it a familiar terrain for beginners and people new to the game.
  • It helps build that mindless self-confidence the best players have. Whether you have a team to fall back on in your own defeat, or a team relying on you because the match comes down to your court, there comes a point where a team tennis player conditions him or herself to ignore those pressures and trust in their game to play its course. Easier said than done? Yes. Always the case? Not close. But it does happen, and it feels good when it does.
  • Sometimes there’s a party. Another cool thing about team tennis is the potential for post-match gatherings. Even in defeat, pizza tastes great.
  • It’s the sport of a lifetime with friends by your side. How could it get better than that?
